Hoophouse Update..

It was a team effort to get plastic on the new hoop house - at 15 feet she is much taller than our other hoop house.  Luckily the wind gusts were not too strong and the rain held off until the afternoon.  As a retrofit of old parts she took a little jury rigging but we are so excited to have the space and have already planted in the eucalyptus plugs and another row of sweet peas.  A bit anxious about not having a solar controlled automatic ventilation system but hopeful the rollup sides will be adequate. The greenhouse is starting to thin out as our cool season flowers get planted out in the field.   I’m starting to feel the crunch of space limitations.  It is so tempting to plant into space reserved for the warm season flowers yet to come.  Keeping to a field plan is like keeping to a budget!   The plentitude of the year is dependent on it.

There are a few ranunculus blooming in our old hoop house (among the sea of lisianthus plugs) that got missed in last summer's cromb removal.  Good evidence that with careful timing we should be able to have enough flowers for donation vases mid March next year.  That is exciting!

Given we have two hoop houses now we will need to come up with names to differentiate them.  Too tired now to think of something fun but a good project to ponder while planting.  Personally struggling with having the crew work while I’m at the clinic. They both have great judgment and solid work ethic but I find it nerve wracking to not be present.  I know time is of the essence in getting spring plugs into the soil why temps are still cool and I simply can’t be in two places at once.  I’m hopeful that moving to one full time farm lead position will help provide the continuity I feel is lacking.  On that note I’ve interviewed someone that I’m terribly excited about.  She needs a week to decide and my fingers and toes are going to be knotted from keeping them crossed that long.
